On 20th of November 2019, we were given a talk by Dr.Rekaya Vincent Balang about Professionalism and Ethics : Doctor and Nurses Games. The talk was held at Seminar Room, Faculty of Medicine and Health Science. The main core of the talk is to give a slight view to all student on how do work as a team in health profession.
Health profession in the Hospital is not only limited to the doctors but it involved all hands in making hospital run well. In order hospital to run well, all people from different various health profession have to play their part well. For example, nurse. Nursing is a profession within the health care sector focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life. Nurses may be differentiated from other health care providers by their approach to patient care, training, and scope of practice.
Dr. Rekaya told that nurse and doctor have to work together as a team. In the talk he explained to us about the Doctor - Nurse Game Theory, which introduced by Leonard Stein in 1967. This theory is approach used to understand how an individual and groups of people related to health profession have to work together. There are two main points emphasized by Dr.Rekaya which is as team of health profession, they should have a same main goal and have a teamwork with good communication.
Beside, Dr.Rekaya also introduced to us about the skills that needed to maintain the professionalism and ethics. The skills are :-
1.Empathy
2.Communication skills
3.Be a team player
4.Dealing with pressure superbly, dealing with criticism appropriately and effectively
5.Strong work ethic and time management
6.Positive mental attitude
7.Actions based on the meaning of professionalism and ethics (e.g: Hippocratic Oath and Declaration of Alma-Ata)
Last but not least, Dr. Rekaya also mention about the factors that could influence the dynamic entity of doctor-nurse relationship would be race and gender.
To conclude the talk, Nursing has essentially developed as a health-oriented profession that emphasizes focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life while for Medicine has developed as an illness-oriented profession that gives emphasis to the treatment and prevention of disease, injury, and deformity through complex surgical, biochemical, and technical interventions. The doctor and nurses need each other as a team in order to treat patients as that was their main goal.
